Hidden Gem at Morgan A Greenhouse Above the City

There are moments when you rediscover something about a place you already love, and it reminds you why it means so much to you. That happened to me recently during a mental health walk on the campus of Morgan State University.

I’ve always said I love my HBCU, but this time I discovered something that honestly surprised me. Tucked away on the 6th floor of the Health and Human Services Center is a greenhouse. Yes… a whole greenhouse sitting above the campus. I had heard about it before, but I never really knew how to get to it. During my walk, I decided to stop by, and I’m so glad I did. As soon as I stepped inside, I saw familiar faces and felt that warm Morgan energy that always makes the space feel welcoming.

What really caught my attention were the plants. There were arugulas and kale growing, along with different vegetables and herbs throughout the greenhouse. I even saw seeds being planted, which reminded me how much patience and intention goes into growing food. Seeing everything in different stages of growth from tiny seeds to leafy greens ready to harvest was honestly beautiful.

I spotted so many vegetables throughout the space that it took me a moment to process it all. It felt like a little ecosystem right in the middle of campus. For a second, I almost forgot I was on the sixth floor of a building in the city.

For me, this stop was more than just seeing plants. It was a reminder of how important it is to slow down and check in with yourself. My walk started as a mental health break, but it turned into a moment of learning and appreciation. Spaces like this create room to breathe, reflect, and reconnect.

One of the things I love about Morgan is that there is always something new to discover even when you think you know the campus well. This greenhouse is definitely one of those hidden gems.

If you ever find yourself on campus, take the time to stop by. Look around, notice the growth happening in that space, and maybe even reflect on your own growth too.

Safe to say, I’ll definitely be back.
